Ra McGuire in case you didn't know is the singer of Vancouver's greatest rock band Trooper and the band were a musical guest on the pilot episode of the show which was an hour special introducing the show as it was going to be a series during the new season of 1979 for a half hour long as the pilot episode aired on May 1979 as they performed We're Here For a Good Time, Round, Round We Go and Raise a Little Hell.
I (Greg Tiderington) was seeing Trooper perform at the Dragon Boat Festival this summer of 2004 as they still got that rhythm going but only two of the members since they guested on the pilot apart from Ra was just guitarist Brian Smith and the others replacements.
They opened up the show with We're Here For a Good Time and during the encore they even closed off with the that same hit. They also whipped their audience into a frenzy performing Raise a Little Hell and we were all clapping along just like the studio audience did in the pilot episode when they performed that song. It was a one wild night as it was outdoors and a very warm and clear night.
Later on they were signing autographs at the T-shirt stand and I asked Ra if he'd be patient enough to have an interview with me and let me know if he was up to it after he signs autographs for the bunch of fans waiting but while he was signing autographs he was mentioning that Ruth Buzzi's character was whacking him with a purse which was his favourite part and when he received a copy of the pilot that it was cut off and he never got to see it but I told him it never showed that scene when it got aired so it must've been cut out plus the scene where he tells Christine (Moose to alot of people) that she shouldn't chew gum while introducing the band before they performed We're Here For a Good Time was all acted out and planned.
He finally let me know he could but it had to be fast so I did the best I could to get enough info from him. Here it goes!

Greg: How did you get involved as a musical guest on Whatever Turns You On?

Ra: Our agent booked it and we were performing at a Juno Award ceremony the night before and our bassist and some other band members were drunk that night and during the next day they were in a hangover.

Greg: Did you have any rehearsals before you performed?

Ra: No we didn't. We just had a run through and our bassist was late so our road manager had to step in during that time and then our bassist arrived during the shoot and had an aspirin can with him cause of his hangover.

Greg: Now the music was over-dubbed with your studio version of the songs you performed. Did you play the music live too when it was shot?

Ra: No we faked our playing and lipsynched while it was being shot.

Greg: Were any of the cast members fans of your band Trooper?

Ra: I am even surprised that I remember performing on the show as it was such a long time ago that we were on so I wouldn't know. I am alot older now than I was then as that was back in the late 70's.

Greg: What do you remember most of performing on the pilot episode of the show?

Ra: Actually meeting Ruth Buzzi as I was so excited about it and always wanted to meet her.

Greg: It was a shame that WTYO was short-lived as it wasn't a bad show and changed back to You Can't Do That On Television a year and a half later.

Ra: WTYO was a great show to watch!

This was great to actually talk to the guy behind Trooper as he was very patient with my interview and am glad he remembers some stuff about it. He is truly a cool cat and I hope he will keep the band alive till he dies.
