After waiting a long time to get an interview with my favourite kid cast member of Whatever Turns You On
I finally reached him thanks to Christine McGlade.
He went to school with Jono Gebert and Christine McGlade and enjoyed playing football in school with Jono.
Kevin Somers brought alot of humor into the show as he was a natural character. He was always playing the airhead in the series.
His most memorable roles in the series was playing the vicious Don't Bee in Educational Programming, never getting what he wanted in the studio cafeteria and the waitress Lois (Played by Ruth Buzzi) always conned him with his orders in Union Fees, Tricking his friend Jono into buying his lucky rabbit foot in Superstions, wanting to be a rock star in Kevin Somers Rock Star and in most episodes owing Ross money.
Well here's what he had to say about his experience in the series.

Greg: I know that before there was Whatever Turns You On there was You Can't Do That On Television. How did you find out about the show?

Kevin: From YCDTOTV.

Greg: How many episodes of YCDTOTV’s 79 season were in in? Did you do the locker jokes?

Kevin:
I think I was 2 or 3. I did do locker jokes.

Greg: Now only a handful of people got into WTYO. Did Roger Price like your work in YCDTOTV so he asked you to be in WTYO?

Kevin: Yes.

Greg:
What was it like doing the pilot episode of that show in May?

Kevin: It was exciting.

Greg: What was your reaction that you were going to have Ruth Buzzi playing the female adult characters in the skits?

Kevin:
We were happy to have a famous comedian working with us.

Greg: Do you ever see her around?

Kevin: While we were filming, she was around.

Greg:
Were you excited that you were going to do a prime time series after the pilot won CTV to make a series in the fall?

Kevin:
Yes.

Greg:
Did the show ever air in the U.S.?

Kevin:
I don't know.

Greg:
What memorable experiences did you have doing the show?

Kevin:
It was fun when the band's came.

Greg:
Out of all the comedy skits like the classroom, living room, dome intro’s and cafeteria which one did you enjoy doing the most?

Kevin:
I liked the living room because Les Lye was so funny.

Greg:
Who did you get along with the most in the show?

Kevin: Christine and Jonathan.

Greg:
Were you a big fan of any of the musical guests on that show?

Kevin: I liked Trooper and Max Webster.

Greg:
In Boss Helal, you introduced the Kevin Page Band but they never made it big. Did you know if they ever released an album or performed at any local gigs?

Kevin: I never heard from them again.

Greg:
I understand that you were a big fan of the group Rush and you wore a T-shirt of them in the Lottery episode. Was that shirt yours?

Kevin:
Yes.

Greg: I also remembered you as the son of Dracula in Repeats as Les Lye played your father. Any memorable experiences on set of those skits?

Kevin:
No, I hardly remember that.

Greg:
The one I thought you were great in was playing the Don’t Bee in a lost episode called Educational Programming as Christine played the Nanny and you had a pillow stinger that you whacked people with. What was it like playing that part?

Kevin:
Fun.

Greg:
Did you get any feedback from friends, family or viewers doing that? I thought you were a natural character playing that part.

Kevin:
People seemed to like watching a ranting maniacal bee.

Greg:
Do you know if there was a musical guest during that episode? I saw it air on YTV in 1988 when the channel was new and couldn’t remember. If so what was the name of the group?

Kevin:
I can't remember.

Greg:
Do you have a copy of that show? It was my favourite one and feel completely lost without it as others would like to see it too and the same with the fans.

Kevin:
No I don’t. If you get one, let me know.

Greg: I also remember another missing episode where you were going to try out for a cereal commercial and wore a white suit and a hat (Similar costume to the one in the Christmas episode) dancing in the dome area but they said you were too tall so Kevin Schenk was the kid doing the cereal commercial. Do you remember anything from that episode?

Kevin:
No.

Greg: Also in the last episode before the show was axed was called Kevin Somers Rock Star. You had a guitar but you didn’t have a guitar strap to wrap around you. Was it hard holding the guitar when your character made out that you were going to play it?

Kevin:
Not too hard.

Greg:
Did you ask the producers what the reason was for not having a strap?

Kevin:
I never thought about it.

Greg:
A skit in that one I got a kick out of was when Ruth Buzzi’s character Miss Fidt was tied up and gagged in the classroom as well as when you were going to play and the bell rang so everyone ran out. Was there any outtakes of those two?

Kevin:
I'm not sure.

Greg: Out of all the episodes you performed in WTYO which one will you always remember doing?

Kevin:
The Don't Bee was fun.

Greg:
Were you upset when WTYO was axed as it was a very good show but not good for a primetime slot?

Kevin:
We were all a little sad.

Greg: When you were told that YCDTOTV was going to re-air this time as a primetime show but you were only going to be taking turns with Jono doing only two skits as it was the dungeon and fire execution ones due to your age did this disappoint you as you were one of the key members in WTYO and not in the 81 season of YCDTOTV?

Kevin:
It was time to move on. I would have felt silly if I stayed too long.

Greg:
After the 81 season finished both you and Jono got the boot along with the rest of the WTYO members except for Christine McGlade and Lisa Ruddy. During this time were you just deciding to finish up your grad year at school?

Kevin:
I just kept going to school.

Greg:
I understand you did a pilot with Christine and Jono called Bear Rapids but did you do any more acting gigs like Rodney Helal did the odd one now and then since you had many fans that liked you in WTYO?

Kevin:
No, I did nothing else.

Greg:
What are you doing today?

Kevin:
I’m a teacher and writer. I write for The Women’s Post.

Greg:
Have you thought of returning to do the odd acting gig if a show like WTYO came up? I think you’d still have the knack for it.

Kevin:
No, it is too competitive. If I was handed a job I would take it, though.
